Aromatherapy for a Cozy Home

When you think back to family holidays when you were a child, what comes to mind? Do you think of the yummy scents coming from your grandmother’s kitchen? Can you remember how you felt when she took the cinnamon rolls out of the oven? Or the smell of spices and turkey at Thanksgiving? Now when you smell cinnamon or sage, do certain memories pop up in your mind? Do they make you feel warm and cozy?

So is the feeling of coziness relegated to dark, damp, cold days? No, of course not! We can be comfortable and snug in any weather. Isn’t that the way we would want to describe our home, no matter the weather?

What Makes a Scent Cozy?

So, what makes a scent cozy? A scent that brings to remembrance cherished memories is cozy. Something that makes you comfortable and relaxed is cozy. Breathing in these scents creates a sense of calm. Cozy scents create ambiance and make your home feel warm and inviting.

10 Ways to Make your Home Cozy With Scent

Use Essential Oil Reed Diffusers

You can make one of these for your home by finding a suitable jar with a small opening and purchasing reed sticks that will stick out of the bottle opening by a few inches. Add a carrier oil and essential oils to the bottle and put the sticks in. If you don’t want to use oil, you can also use water mixed with some alcohol (rubbing alcohol, perfumer’s alcohol, or vodka).

Scented Candles

Try scented candles with warm and comforting fragrances with ingredients like vanilla, cinnamon, lavender, or cedarwood to create a cozy ambiance.

Simmer Potpourri on the Stove

Boil two cups of water on the stove. Add a sliced lemon, some rosemary, cloves, and vanilla extract to make your house smell lovely.

I have a mini crockpot that is meant for potpourri. I’m not sure if they make them anymore, but I’m sure you could use any crockpot.

Potpourri Spray

When you’re finished simmering the stove potpourri on the stove, put the remainder of the water in a spray bottle and use it as a room spray.

Scented Sachets

Put scented sachets in drawers, closets, or in-between linens to infuse your fabrics with a subtle, long-lasting fragrance.

Linen Sprays

Use linen sprays with cozy scents to on things like curtains, upholstery, and bedding. To make your own, get a 2 oz spray bottle. Add a tablespoon of witch hazel or isopropyl alcohol and 24 drops of essential oil. Fill the rest up with water.

Aromatic Plants/Fragrant Flowers

Having fresh cut flowers and plants around your house not only makes it cozy because of their lovely scent, but they also have a positive effect on your emotional and mental wellbeing. You get pleasure just by looking at them as they are visually appealing, and their colors are beautiful. Different colors can have different effects on people. For instance, yellow and orange can evoke energy and happiness. Being connected to nature reduces stress. Taking care of plants and flowers encourages you to be present in the moment.

Baking and Cooking

Make your home smell wonderful with the scent of dinner cooking or bread baking. Not only is the scent cozy but enjoying a yummy meal with your loved ones makes it even cozier.

Wax Melts and Warmers

Wax melts are an alternative to candles that are just as fragrant. Some people like them better as they are smaller, less messy, and flame free. Also, you don’t have to worry about the glass container breaking. Last year I bought some glass containers specifically for candles. Thankfully, I used them on the stove because they all broke as they got to the bottom of the candle.

Incense Sticks

Burning incense sticks is another alternative to filling your home with a warm and calming scent. There are many fragrance options and even cool looking incense holders.
