5 ways to use dandelion in your skincare
Dandelions, which people often think of as pesky weeds, are in fact a powerhouse of nutrients and benefits for your skin. They are low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants and minerals including vitamin K, several B vitamins, iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Dandelion greens are a good source of fiber. Dandelion root is good for the health of your liver. They contain compounds which increase bile production that assist in digestion and the removal of toxins.
I love using dandelions. Maybe it’s their cheerful color or their hardiness or the fact that they invite me to make a wish. Or it could be that I don’t have to grow them, and they are free. I love the color of dandelion infused oil and that it’s good for sensitive skin. I also enjoy spending time outdoors picking them. (Don’t worry, I leave plenty for the bees.)
Dandelions offer a range of skincare benefits that can transform your daily routine. Incorporating dandelions into your daily skincare routine is a natural and effective way to promote healthy, glowing skin.
Dandelions contain cichoric acid which breaks down hyaluronic acid. It stops free radicals from damaging collagen. The dandelion is a good cleanser. It has antioxidants which can help get rid of acne. Dandelion is great for facial steams and cleansing. It is useful as a moisturizer for all skin types. Dandelion is also good for eczema.
Here are some ideas on you can use the power of dandelions for radiant, healthy skin:
Dandelion Infused Oil
Create your own dandelion-infused oil by soaking dried dandelion flowers in a carrier oil, such as olive or almond oil. This infused oil can be used as a moisturizer for dry skin, a massage oil to soothe tired muscles, or a gentle makeup remover.
See this post on infusing oil for directions.
Anti-aging face oil:
Add rose and/or rosehip seed oil, frankincense or elemi, helichrysum, and lavender to your dandelion infused oil.
Eye Oil
Dandelion infused apricot oil, rosehip seed oil, jojoba oil, chamomile, lavender and rose can be used as an eye oil.
Eczema Oil:
Dandelion infused oil with Elemi or Frankincense, Helichrysum, Jojoba oil, Lavender and patchouli make a great oil for skin with eczema.
Spray for burns or itchy skin:
Make a rose decoction or hydrosol and add dandelion infused oil, aloe, lavender and tea tree for a spray for burns or itchy skin.
Dandelion Tea Toner
Brew a strong cup of dandelion tea and let it cool. Use this tea as a toner by applying it to your skin with a cotton pad or putting it in a spray bottle. You can add things like aloe, green tea, oil, or glycerin to your toner. Dandelion tea is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent choice for soothing irritated or acne-prone skin. Store any leftover tea in the fridge for a refreshing skin pick-me-up throughout the day.
Dandelion Leaf Face Mask
Mix dried dandelion leaves with honey and aloe vera gel to create a hydrating and rejuvenating face mask. Apply the mask to clean skin, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. This mask can help to brighten dull skin, reduce redness, and improve overall skin texture.
Dandelion Root Scrub
Grind dried dandelion roots into a fine powder (I like to use a coffee grinder) and mix with sugar and coconut oil to create a nourishing body scrub. This scrub can help to exfoliate dead skin cells, leaving your skin soft and smooth. Use it in the shower, massaging gently into damp skin before rinsing off.
Dandelion Flower Bath
There are many ways to enjoy dandelion in your bathtub. Here are a few ideas:
You can add dried dandelion flowers directly to your bath for a luxurious and relaxing experience.
You can dry them and make a powder with them and add it to coconut milk powder, ground oatmeal, and baking soda for a soothing bath milk.
You can make a strong tea with them and pour it into your bath.
You can use ground dandelions and ground oatmeal as powdered face and body cleanser.
Dandelion flowers are believed to have detoxifying properties and can help to soothe irritated skin. Simply sprinkle a handful of dried flowers into your bath water and soak for 20-30 minutes.
